Why the great American phobia about gas taxes?

Because for the majority of the population you can't get anywhere or do anything in this country without driving and we're decades behind the curve on public transportation. Here's a wacko radical environmental prediction I made 30 years ago: We better tax gas now while it's cheap and build public transportation with the money because when oil prices finally spike we're gonna get caught short. We're in a damn deep hole now.
