Action of antivirus software on CD-ROM?

Can antivirus softwares disinfect files on CD?If yes,then which are those and if no,why..?If this does not work,will infected file will have to be copied first to hard disk and then try to disinfect it using antivirus?Will that be a safe option?In case of mine,the infected file is .exe file.
